Mudvayne can accurately be thought of as leaders of the second wave of Nu Metal acts. This isn't to say the Mudvayne--who hit their stride at the dawn of the new millennium--were johnny-come-lately bandwagoneers; rather, they were genuinely influenced by the heavy doses of funk and rhythm bands such as Korn, Rage Against the Machine, and Limp Bizkit injected into the metal template. Earlier on in their career, the band would appear in blood-splattered costumes, thus standing out amongst the competition; however, it is the band's music--melodic, agitated, complex, and heavy as sin--that made them a lasting threat in the metal world.
