Review

Option (5-6/97, pp.120-121) - "...Panasonic's electronic industrial vibe is never overpowering, instead working sparse, repetitive sounds into a series of entrancing tracks that recall the fragmented, skipping-CD esthetic of Oval....eerily seductive."

Title Note

Finland's premier electronic provocateurs Mika Vainio and Ilpo Vaisanen always professed admiration for the shock tactics of The KLF's Jimmy Cauty (whose ideations include the lethal "sound cannon"). With KULMA (and the preceding OSASTO EP), Pan Sonic's own inclinations towards sonic terrorism come to the forefront of the group's minimalist techno lattices. The subtle shifts and pulses of the earlier VAKIO are largely absent from the duo's second album, replaced instead by an onslaught of grating, screeching, and squealing slaughterhouse hydraulics.

The opening "Teurastamo" (which is indeed Finnish for "slaughterhouse") is saturated in distortion and mechanical stridency that sets KULMA's bracing tone. Predominantly angular and jarring, the album works through variations on Pan Sonic's distinctive combination of repetitive beats and raw electronics. Whether defined by scything noise ("Puhdistus"), intricate sine-bubble-embossing (the wonderful "Murto Neste" and croaking "Kurnutus"), stuttering static ("Rutina"), or automated workings ("Moottori"), KULMA's rhythms have evolved considerably since VAKIO's techno-based gridwork. The sonar sculpture of the gorgeous "-25" and scattered, buzzing pure tonal interludes balance KULMA's aggressive tendencies and speak for the inexhaustible beauty inherent in Pan Sonic's formula.
