One of the key figures in contemporary Native American music, R.Carlos Nakai's musical explorations have never been restricted to the traditional. A master of the Native American flute, Nakai often performs original material, collaborates with various composers, and incorporates chanting, synthesizer, ambient textures, and the sounds of nature into his unique aesthetic. KOKOPELLI'S CAF is an album Nakai cut with his quartet, an ensemble that blends Native American themes with jazz fusion.
Sinuous bass lines, wailing sax, wiry guitar, and Nakai's classic flute sound coalesce here in a brew that goes down smooth and easy. "Mo'Combo Gumbo," for example, has a mellow, midtempo vibe that invites the listener to sway along. "Javelina Shuffle" is reserved, with Nakai's flute floating over a funky rhythm. There are a few moments, like the haunting "Lizard Moon," that recall traditional Native American fare, but for the most part this is an album of relaxing, light jazz replete with Nakai's special touch.
