Though they only gained international popularity in the mid-1990s, the Kodo ensemble has been experimenting with the boundaries of traditional Japanese drumming for several decades. Kodo's drumming technique, called "taiko", comes from ancient Japan. The style is marked by its incorporation of both the flute and the chant. Made up of 19 musicians, Kodo is always looking for ways to further expand their horizons; one way the group attempts this is through collaboration with other artists. In the ONE EARTH TOUR SPECIAL, Kodo works under the art direction of Tamasaburo Bando, a well-known "onnagata" in Kabuki theatre. Having gained celebrity status in Japan for his performances in female roles, Bando helps Kodo redefine their constantly evolving performance style.
