Review

"Marcus' greatest service is to remind readers that the mind is manifestly not the creation of so-called intelligent design."

Publisher's note

The author of The Birth of the Mind argues that the human mind is not a meticulously designed organ but rather a "kluge," a clumsy, cobbled-together contraption, offering a revealing study of some of the complex aspects of human nature, how the mind falls short in such areas as memory, belief, decision-making, language, and emotion, and the influence of evolution on the creation of the human mind.

Annotation

A "kluge" is an engineering term used to describe an awkward solution to a specific problem, a machine cobbled together from whatever parts were handy to create a short-term and inelegant fix. NYU professor Marcus Garvey uses the term to refer to the human brain, a haphazard organ that has evolved over millions of years in response to millions of random problems and situations, many that no longer exist. The result is a highly error-prone, irrational, and occasionally broken system. Garvey uses evolutionary psychology and a wealth of interesting evidence to demonstrate the brain's many flaws, and then suggests ways in which we can overcome our own inherent mental state to achieve happiness and wisdom.
