Review

Alternative Press (2/96, p.68) - "...This is not music meant for description but for experiencing--a wild sonic ride which moves from reverential chanting to dramatic, rhythmic drum rituals to spacey plateaus all within the space of 67 minutes. Cutting-edge techno-tribal sounds."
Down Beat (10/95, p.62) - 4 Stars - Very Good - "...By tapping into the mystical aspects of traditional ceremonies, Roach, Stearns and Sunsinger have created a unique, imaginative fusion of ancient sounds with state-of-the-art production and technology....an impressionistic journey....challenging and radically different..."
Option (3-4/96, p.119) - "...they sound more like modern primitives, as they mix Native American chanting and drumming with dark, moody soundscapes..."

Title Note

Full performer name: Steve Roach/Michael Stearns/Ron Sunsinger.

Steve Roach rounds out the final part of this wonderful triptych, here collaborating with fellow space music maven Michael Stearns and Native American musician Ron Sunsinger. As ominous electronic spirals unwind and writhe behind the disc's eerie chants and naturally realized sounds, it derives its latent power from, and heartily champions, the desert's ceremonial legacy. All three musicians have trodden down these paths before, but, as on "Mother Ayahuasca," the addition of pulsating analog blips and mutated whistles lends just the right degree of strangeness that both contradicts the sacred charms of the unfolding compositions, yet is most integral to their development. Though it's difficult to say which of the three participants are responsible for the disc's broad textural hues, ultimately the merging of sensibilities, concepts, and direction makes KIVA quite the compelling listen.
