Annotation

Released in 1968, the Kinks' THE KINKS ARE THE VILLAGE GREEN PRESERVATION SOCIETY was originally intended to be the apex of band leader Ray Davies' career. The album was a collection of interconnected pop songs in the vein of the Beatles' SGT. PEPPER and the Who's TOMMY, its theme one of nostalgia for the passing of traditional British values. But its subject matter didn't sit well with a public more attuned to the futuristic explorations of Jimi Hendrix and other iconoclastic artists, and it rapidly sank without a trace. However, as British music writer Andy Miller's engrossing study of the album shows, PRESERVATION SOCIETY was resurrected soon afterwards by the music cognoscenti, and is now considered to be not only the Kinks' best work but also one of the Sixties' milestone albums. Another entry in the excellent 33 1/3 series of book-length examinations of seminal works by significant artists, THE KINKS ARE THE VILLAGE GREEN PRESERVATION SOCIETY also explores the writing and recording of other, often obscure Kinks songs of the period. Miller's in-depth research unearths fascinating musical and personal details of a band at perhaps its lowest ebb and contains many perceptive insights into Davies' creative process and numerous insecurities.
