Kim Lenz And Her Jaguars: Kim Lenz (vocals, guitar); Mike Lester (guitar); Jake Erwin (acoustic bass); Robert Hamilton (drums).

This self-titled debut from Kim Lenz and her three piece backing band, The Jaguars, is a polished offering from a rough-and-ready rockabilly outfit that was formed in 1996, two years prior to this release. Lenz, who plays rhythm guitar, sings her songs (she wrote all but four of the album's selections) with bracing believability. From a whisper to a yell, she knows her roots well, as does the band. The sessions were recorded in a way that best captures the warm interplay that lies at the heart of this band's music. The band can do a song like "The Swing"," complete with background gang vocals and Lenz's crackling "Hey-hey-heys" as well as it can execute a tough mid-tempo number like "Twinkle, Twinkle." A fine start.
