Album Description

The landscape of post-millennial electronic music has evolved into many specialized genres and scenes; with so many styles on offer, it's often hard to track this flourishing musical ecology. One musician, Kid 606 (Miguel Depedro), has tended his own post-rave sound omniverse since the late-'90s. Known for his unabashed genre mixing and irreverent punk aesthetics, Depedro has tackled nearly every electronic genre (from drum & bass and ambient to breakcore and experimental sound-design), all with his signature wicked humor and unpretentious, no-nonsense attitude. KILL SOUND BEFORE SOUND KILLS YOU represents Kid 606's creative peak. Combining the breakneck sound-system mash-ups of his earliest work with shorter, more introspective pieces, it's a frenzied trip through pile-driving breakcore drum-programming and brain-scrambling DSP processes.
Leading off with the pummeling acid-breaks of "The Illness," and segueing seamlessly into the old school ragga-jungle number "Who Wah Kill Sound?" it seems as if Depedro wants to hasten through 10 years of dance music in the span of just two songs. Restlessly flitting between collapsing "Amen" breaks and a maelstrom of sounds including dancehall sirens, ragga vocals, and a tangle of other unnamable sources, it sounds like nothing so much as an underground rave being held inside the eye of a typhoon. Depedro steps up the extreme sound-design with the churning DSP manipulations of "Buckle Up"--a storming tech-step number featuring dancehall D Wayne Lonesome, whose gruff-voiced toasting lends the twisted, crystalline sounds a human touch. Providing much-needed relief from all the sonic carnage, "Parenthood" ends the album on a gentle note. Featuring tranquil, rolling synths, its placid ambient textures stand in stark contrast to the rest of KILL SOUND--reminding the listener of Kid 606's boundless, genre-defying originality.
