Slated for the release this month is Kile Smith's Vespers, performed here by Piffaro (The Renaissance Band) in collaboration with The Crossing Vocal Ensemble, conducted by Donald Nally. Its 2008 premiere won strong praise from David Stearns of The Philadelphia Inquirer, who called it "breathtaking [and] ecstatically beautiful." Audiences and critics have long celebrated Smith's music for its emotional power, straightforward appeal, and strong voice.

Commissioned by Piffaro, Vespers is a modern liturgical work that beautifully combines hallmakrs of Renaissance vocal liturgy with professional wind band performance within a modern context. Robert Weimken, Piffaro's Artistic Co-Director, commented: "We weren't interested in having a composer write 'in a Renaissance style.' Rather, we wanted to utilize Renaissance material as a springboard into a totally new work, a new vision, a new language."
