This is one of those discs that blurs of the lines when you look for an easy way to categorize it. It has the feel of a folk-blues singer/songwriter disc, as the songs are more story-oriented and written by the performer, but it is played with an electrified band that takes short rock-style solo breaks. At any rate, this is a noteworthy new voice; Halford not only has something to say, he says it in an interesting and entertaining manner. Halford plays a gritty blues-influenced guitar, and does some piquant slide guitar work to complement his songs. One of the original tunes that requires a good listen is "Creole Moon." The slide guitar helps propel the song into a spicy, natural groove, bringing up just a trace of the mysterious lurking swamp. Similarly, his use of acoustic guitar supports the ideas conveyed in "Kerosene." His songs take in broad American vistas, ranging from city sensibilities to sparsely populated open stretches. His writing has the spareness of poetic sensibility, yet draws vivid images that bring his characters into a sharp focus so they don't come off as cardboard silhouettes. He is an astute observer of his surroundings and uses this gift with words and music to convey his vision in a way that rings with truth. The Healers are a tight and well-functioning unit, providing a more than secure base from which to stretch, the solid underpinning necessary for success. This is too gifted and talented a voice to leave to the enjoyment of only those in the Bay area, which he calls home, for too long. ~ Bob Gottlieb
