3.5 stars out of 5 - "[F]eatures knockout live-in-the-studio [performances]..."

Title Note

Nic Harcourt's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" radio show on Santa Monica, California's KCRW is renowned for its dynamic, trend-setting music programming. Recorded without any overdubs, the sessions broadcast on the show reveal musicians in a refreshingly spare setting. On this 2005 KCRW compilation, both newer and long-established artists perform in the station's studio, from the post-punk-influenced breakout band Franz Ferdinand (the energetic "Take Me Out") to former Jam man Paul Weller (the gentle "Amongst Butterflies").

Kentucky twang-rockers My Morning Jacket run through a blazing "One Big Holiday" (perhaps the most rocked-out performance to grace the KCRW studio), while Steve Earle creates an equally thrilling effect with only his voice and guitar on "Jerusalem." The two most fascinating tracks on this collection, however, are both reinterpretations of Flaming Lips songs--the band itself contributes a minimal, piano-driven version of "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1" and Iron & Wine glides through a quiet, folky take on "Waitin' for a Superman." A typically versatile SOUNDS ECLECTIC offering, this album reinforces the program's adventurous reputation.
