Title Note

There are a growing number of young superstars in the world of early music and one of the brightest is the countertenor Andreas Scholl. The countertenor has won legions of fans with his warmly expressive voice and excellent musicianship. This is a singer who thinks about the words he is singing, putting him miles ahead of other countertenors on record.

KANTATE is a disc of German Baroque vocal works from the period before Johann Sebastian Bach. Supported by the superb instrumentalists of Concerto di Viole and the Basel Consort, Scholl makes the most of these deeply spiritual songs and cantatas. High points include two works by Bach's idol, Dietrich Buxtehude: the dark "Klag-lied" and a jaunty setting of the psalm "Jubilate Domino." This is extremely moving music with soothing powers akin to chant.

This recording succeeds as both a survey of the fascinating period before Bach and as a showcase for this fine young singer. As an added bonus, the instrumentalists play string sonatas by the neglected Giovanni Legrenzi and Ignazio Albertini.
