Review

Q (May 2002, p.126) - 3 out of 5 stars - "...Their hits epitomise the rediscovered 'sunshine pop' sound: their nimble, flighty mood is perfect as a carefree sunday morning soundtrack."
Mojo (Publisher) (5/02, p.120) - "...This lovingly compiled set will allow you to step into The Association's nice - not too hot - jacuzzi for the soul."

Title Note

The Association includes: Jim Yester (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Jules Gary Alexander (vocals, guitar, bass); Ted Bluechel (vocals, guitar, drums, percussion); Russ Giguere (vocals, guitar, percussion); Larry Ramos (vocals, guitar); Terry Kirkman (vocals, harmonica, reeds, brass, percussion); Richard Thompson (vocals, keyboards); Brian Cole (vocals, bass).

Additional personnel includes: Glen Campbell, Larry Carlton (guitar); Wilton Felder (bass); Hal Blaine (drums); Paulinho Da Costa (percussion).

Producers include: Benny Golson, Barry DeVorzon, Curt Boettcher, Jerry Yester, Bones Howe.

Recorded between 1965 and 1981. Includes liner notes by Dawn Eden.

All tracks have been digitally remastered.

With their flower-power-tinged pop masterpieces and heavenly vocal harmonies the Association was at the epicenter of the '60s California "sunshine pop" scene whose other luminaries included the Mamas & the Papas and the Beach Boys. Though the group's many hits make up a major part of the '60s musical legacy, the Association's only representation on CD in the US before the release of the two-disc, 51-song JUST THE RIGHT SOUND was a single, short hits compilation. In retrospect, it's difficult to comprehend the fact that most of these tracks were never made available to the public at large until 2002, but now pop aficionados may rejoice and marvel at the sparkling perfection of Bones Howe and Curt Boettcher's productions, the sonic equivalent of sunshine on a summer day.

The group's folk-rock beginnings can be heard on such tracks as "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" and Bob Dylan's "One Too Many Mornings." The more complex, harmony-laden elegance that became the Association's trademark is heard on the hits "Cherish" and the majestic "Everything that Touches You." The worlds of psychedelia and protest did not leave these pure popsters untouched, as witnessed by the anti-war "Requiem for the Masses" and the fuzz-guitar-driven "Six Man Band." With the exception of a couple of ill-advised '80s selections toward the end, every cut on JUST THE RIGHT SOUND is a gem, and this collection reiterates the Association's importance in pop history.
