Review

Spin (10/98, pp.141-143) - 6 (out of 10) - "...The arrangements and playing--lots of keyboard and drum samples--are rudimentary. But her talent lies in knowing exactly what to put where...taking simple elements and folding them into angry but elegant origami shapes. Moody, ruminative, at times verging on laid-back, JULIE RUIN is still corrosive..."

Title Note

Julie Ruin is an alter ego of Riot Grrrl scene matriarch Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill and Le Tigre fame. Originally released in 1997, it's a solo album recorded in Hanna's apartment, primarily out of samples and loops over which Hanna sings-chants-raps-declaims manifestos related to semiotics, social engineering, and crocheting. Its 15 tracks are as witty, pointed, and angry as anything in the Bikini Kill catalogue, although its skeletal, homemade bedroom-electronica style presages Le Tigre's more overtly danceable take on the same subjects.
