Though American mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato is equally at home in Romantic as in Baroque repertoire, George Frideric Handel enjoys a prominent position in her recordings. For her first solo aria disc, she has chosen to give voice to the wrath of Handel's vengeful sorceresses, abandoned heroines, and jilted lovers, as well as the (inevitable) descent into madness of jealous wives. Characters from Handel's Italian operas (among them Admeto, Imeneo, Teseo, and Amadigi) rub shoulders with those from his English works (Semele, Hercules.) DiDonato, whose performances bristle with life, relishes such fiery passions, and Handel excels at animating them in his characters. Christoph Rousset, who can match DiDonato note for note in showmanship and intensity, conducts his Baroque specialist group Les Talens Lyrique.
