Publisher's note

Spanning 35 years and 40 albums, Neil Young's career is still going strong. His musical evolution has been as versatile as rock itself: pioneering country-rocker with Buffalo Springfield; seminal folk-rocker with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; gentle acoustic guitarist; crashing hard rock electric guitarist; grunge prototype; and good-times rock and roller. This cerebral singer/songwriter has penned unforgettable melodies, harmonies, and lyrics, portraying plaintive sadness, lilting warmth, and ragged anguish with his unmistakable tenor voice. Offering detailed analyses of this idiosyncratic musician's songs and the stories behind them, this book examines all of Young's key albums from 1967 to 2000, including such milestones as After the Gold Rush, Harvest, Tonight's the Night, Rust Never Sleeps, Harvest Moon, Silver and Gold, and many others. With 160 color photos, Journey Through the Past digs deeply into the music and lyrics of one of rock's most restless spirits.

Annotation

Nigel Williamson's JOURNEY THROUGH THE PAST surveys singer-songwriter Neil Young's recorded output over a period of nearly 40 years, from the 1966 debut of Young's first band, Buffalo Springfield, to 2002's collaboration (ARE YOU PASSIONATE?) with his longtime backing band, Crazy Horse. Brief descriptions of each song, as well as the circumstances under which they were recorded, are augmented with color photographs from various stages in the mercurial musician's career. Williamson traces the steady development of Young's songwriting, including early compositions like "Expecting to Fly," from the mid-'60s, and more mature works like 1992's "Harvest Moon," as well as exploring the significance of songs like the classic anti-heroin diatribe, "Needle and the Damage Done." The author is particularly informative on the origins of Young's homage to punk rock, "Rust Never Sleeps," and his idea that that particular song promotes a kind of artistic permanent revolution. Combining musical history, perceptive analysis, and authoritative research, JOURNEY THROUGH THE PAST is a series of insightful sketches of the career of a constantly evolving artist.
