If Hans and Margaret Rey had not escaped the 1940 Nazi invasion of Paris, the classic children's book character Curious George might have never made it to print. This is the wonderfully researched and written story of their unnerving escape on hand-built bicycles to southern France. Opening with interesting stories about their childhoods, author Louise Borden goes on to describe their 1935 marriage in Brazil, and years spent in Paris that ended with a frantic flight south with just a few possessions and some manuscripts. This fascinating account is accompanied by full-color illustrations, historical and personal photographs, reproductions of documents, and various snippets of original Rey artwork.
