Title Note

Jointz From Back in da Day is a collection of songs from the breakdancing era of the '80s. It would have been great if that was all that was here. Like many sets, the parameters seem to be widened for reasons unknown. That fact does make this lesser than it had to be. There are some great songs here, though. Whodini's "Five Minutes of Funk" still retains the sucker punch that made "regular" R&B and party rap seem fatuous in comparison. The bracing nature of Orbit's "And the Beat Goes On" and Twilight 22's "Electric Kingdom" doesn't diminish the fact these were over and out by the time of the Iran Contra Hearings. Rockers Revenge's cover of Eddy Grant's "Walking on Sunshine" nearly attains the charm of the original. As a CD solely concentrating on under-known breaking tracks, Jointz From Back in da Day works. It does get into trouble when it offers more known and out-of-place tracks. "Call Me" from Skyy and Junior's "Mama Used to Say" simply don't mesh with the chief style offered here. The last track, "Freakshow on the Dance Floor" from the Bar-Kays, certainly does. If anything, Jointz From Back in da Day fails due to its straying from the tracks that actually were rare, true, and seminal '80s breaking classics. ~ Jason Elias
