Review

Entertainment Weekly (p.117) - "[E]ndlessly uplifiting....A vivacious whirl of harmony and orchestration..." -- Grade: A-
Uncut (p.108) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "It rather brims with psychedelic electro-pop of the most inventively buoyant and sweetly retro-futurist kind..."
Q (Magazine) (p.140) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]here's a naivety and nostalgia to his evocations of woozy times on Northern beaches that is uniquely loveable -- the perfect music for a summer's day."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.102) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "For all his plugged-in joy, Noir's beatific mood harks back to a kinder, pre-electronic age -- one track's even named 'Good Old Vinyl.'"
Paste (magazine) (p.68) - "[With] synthesized swells and buzzes, Noir has made great strides with his machines....The addition of an expanded array of tonal colors makes Noir's schtick even more absorbing..."
Clash (magazine) (p.111) - "[A] sweeping record....There are such woozy, laidback joys as 'Happy Day Today' and 'Same Place Holiday'."
Record Collector (magazine) (p.94) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[R]esolutely down-home but blessed with a captivating imagination, as if his hand were in the kitchen sink and his head in the cosmos."

Title Note

British singer-songwriter Jim Noir's first album, TOWER OF LOVE, bore a strong Beach Boys influence. The self-titled follow-up still owes a bit to Brian Wilson and Company, but the Manchester popmeister has expanded his style outwards. A '60s psych-pop flavor undeniably informs much of the music, but there's a markedly more contemporary feel here, and a greater reliance on electronics. Whether the source is analog or digital, though, the swirling kaleidoscope of sound that enriches JIM NOIR gives a dazzling sheen to these peppy pop confections. A sense of musical history will probably always pervade Noir's music, but this collection suggests that he's no mere pop nostalgia peddler.
