After several albums' worth of avant-garde-tinged contemporary jazz on John Zorn's Tzadik label, downtown violinist Jenny Scheinman makes a right turn into singer-songwriter pop-rock on her self-titled 2008 release. Featuring an adult contemporary sound closer to the likes of Sheryl Crow than to the experimental flavor of her instrumental albums, JENNY SCHEINMAN is a surprisingly likeable, tunefully modern pop record. Highlights include a lovely cover of Tom Waits's "Johnsburg, Illinois."
