Title Note

Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Davey Schildkraut (alto saxophone); John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Charlie Parker (tenor saxophone); Bennie Green (trombone); Milt Jackson (vibraphone); Red Garland, Walter Bishop, Thelonius Monk, John Lewis, Horace Silver (piano); Oscar Pettiford, Paul Chambers, Tommy Potter, Percy Heath (bass); Philly Joe Jones, Art Blakey, Kenny Clarke, Max Roach, Roy Haynes (drums).

Recorded from 1953 to 1956. Includes liner notes by Dan Ouellette.

Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1998, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).

This is part of Prestige's Jazz Showcase series.

Though Miles Davis's 30-year tenure at Columbia Records is considerably better known to the casual observer, some fans of the trailblazing trumpeter feel that his best work was done for Prestige Records from 1953 to 1956, the period covered on this excellent 11-track showcase. Though Davis is clearly the standout on these tracks, his sidemen include Art Blakey, Paul Chambers, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Charlie Parker, Red Garland, Thelonious Monk, and John Lewis, making this a virtual Who's Who of the mid-'50s New York cool jazz and hard bop scene. Though Davis's most famous recording for Prestige, "Walkin'," isn't included, other early masterpieces like "'Round Midnight" and "Miles Ahead" are, making JAZZ SHOWCASE a solid introduction to a sometimes-overlooked period in the development of one of jazz's greatest talents.
