Title Note

Personnel: Bill Evans (piano); Freddie Hubbard (trumpet); Jim Hall (guitar); Paul Chambers, Scott LaFaro, Chuck Israels, Percy Heath, Teddy Kotick (bass); Philly Joe Jones, Paul Motian, Connie Kay (drums).

Recorded between September 27, 1956 and July 16, 1962. Includes liner notes by Derk Richardson.

Digitally remastered by Kirk Felton (1992, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).

Bill Evans (1929-1980) was one of the most distinctive and lyrical pianists that jazz ever produced. His style consisted of long, flowing lines, deceptive simplicity and dazzling technique (classical pianist Glenn Gould was a fan of Evans'). Evans was an innovator as well--before him, in the trio format of piano/bass/drums, the piano was in the foreground while the bass and drums filled a "supportive" role. In the late 1950 and early '60, Evans brought all three instruments to equal prominence; so the trio engaged in a three-way dialogue. He was a member of the Miles Davis group that recorded KIND OF BLUE, and played in ensembles helmed by Art Farmer, Lee Konitz and Stan Getz.

JAZZ SHOWCASE is a cross-section of the many recordings Evans made in 1959-1961. Many of Evans' tunes have become standards ("Waltz For Debby," "Re: Person I Knew"), and he knew how to treat others' work (Brubeck's "In Your Own Sweet Way," George Shearing's "Conception") with style and gentle grace. As an introduction to Evans or jazz piano in general, JAZZ SHOWCASE is ideal.
