JazzTimes (p.80) - "Marcin Wasilewski does not think like other jazz pianists. His improvisational underpinnings, his sense of musical space and his aural imagery are so fresh they are initially mysterious, then get more so."
Global Rhythm (Publication) (p.49) - "Wasilewski is a player of great emotional depth and undeniable skill, showcased here within a series of original compositions and interpretations of material from writers as diverse as Prince, Carla Bley and Ennio Morricone."
Marcin Wasilewski Trio: Marcin Wasilewski (piano); Slawomir Kurkiewicz (double bass); Michal Miskiewicz (drums).
Marcin Wasilewski rose to prominence as the pianist for trumpeter and fellow Pole Tomasz Stanko. Wasilewski brought a gorgeous, impressionistic palette to Stanko's sound, and that quality also shines through JANUARY, Wasilewski's second outing as a leader on ECM. In his lyricism and delicate phrasing, Wasilewski sometimes recalls Bill Evans, but the repertoire here, which includes music by Ennio Morricone, Carla Bley, and Prince, in addition to Wasilewski's originals, reflects the artist's savvy, postmodern sensibility. Fans of Stanko, and of ECM's always fresh, ambient take on jazz, are encouraged to give this fine release a listen.
