As part of its Great Recordings of the Century series, EMI Classics has meticulously remastered Simon Rattle's 1982 recording of Jan cek's Sinfonietta and Glagolitic Mass. The Czech composer, who rose to international fame late in his life, wrote hauntingly beautiful music, steeped in the complex culture of his people and a love of his newly founded nation.

The Sinfonietta tells the story of the liberation of Moravia's capital and its transformation into the free Czech city of Brno. It is one of the first pieces written by Jan cek after his rise to international prominence, and an opportunity for him to tout the virtue of his native land. Rattle and the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra provide a dignified and proud performance to a piece full of rousing pomp and energy.

The Glagolitic Mass has a curious significance, as the composer had little use for organized religion. Despite his opinions, his mass is widely considered to be among the finest choral pieces written in the 20th century. The emotional and linguistic nuances achieved in its writing--and in this performance--are remarkable.
