Title Note

Producers: Lee Perry, Pauline Morrison, Bunny Lee.

Recorded at Randy's And Wirl Studio, Kingston, Jamaica between 1969 and 1972.

Recorded between 1969 and 1972 at Kingston's Randy's Studio One and produced by the legendary Lee Perry (possibly the most sympathetic artistic partner Bob Marley ever had), the 18 singles collected here document one of reggae's most vital and exciting periods. At the time of this record's release, reggae was about to make the transition from Jamaica's idiosyncratic local pop music into a worldwide musical and cultural phenomenon. The songs find Marley moving into the explicit Rastafarianism ("Thank You Lord," "Satisfy My Soul Jah Jah") and overt social commentary ("Rainbow Country," "Hypocrites") that marked his later work on Island Records. Perry's production style, strikingly innovative throughout, grows increasingly darker, more rhythmic and dub-oriented as the collection moves on. This is the exciting sound of a revolution being born.
