Title Note

JAM SESSION is a specialy imported, limited-edition reissue. All tracks have been digitally remastered.

The contents of this Trip LP have been reissued on CD. The lineup of this jam session is quite remarkable: Trumpeters Clifford Brown, Clark Terry and Maynard Ferguson, altoist Herb Geller, tenor-saxophonist Harold Land, Richie Powell or Junior Mance on piano, Keeter Betts or George Morrow on bass and drummer Max Roach. A nearly 15-minute "What Is This Thing Called Love" gives one the opportunity to compare the three very different trumpeters, "Darn That Dream" is a ballad feature for singer Dinah Washington, "Move" is taken at an incredible tempo which holds up for 14« minutes and this set concludes with a four-song ballad medley; Brownie's playing on "It Might as Well Be Spring" is classic. A brilliant set that is highly recommended (and included in full on Clifford Brown's ten-CD EmArcy box). ~ Scott Yanow

Norman Granz and his Pablo label took over a large part of the 1977 Montreux Jazz Festival (as they had done in 1975) and there were quite a few albums released that documented his all-star groups caught live and in spontaneous form. This double LP (six of the nine selections have since been issued as a single CD with the same title) has performances not included on the other albums. A who's who of veteran jazz greats are heard from including trumpeters Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Jon Faddis and Roy Eldridge, tenors Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Zoot Sims and Ronnie Scott, altoist Benny Carter, trombonists Vic Dickenson and Al Grey, pianists Oscar Peterson, Count Basie and Monty Alexander, guitarist Joe Pass, bassists Niels Pedersen and Ray Brown, and drummers Bobby Durham and Jimmie Smith. The tunes they perform (in five overlapping groups) are generally fairly basic but the playing has its share of surprising moments and this two-fer gives one a strong overview of the Pablo label in the 1970s. ~ Scott Yanow
