Title Note

This album received the 2005 Grammy Award for "Best Classical Vocal Performance."

It takes a special type of artist to effectively interpret the music of Charles Ives, since its intricacies require great technical proficiency. More importantly, Ives's work demands a level of musical intelligence and open-mindedness that allows for a real understanding of his aesthetic. Pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard and soprano Susan Graham easily fall into this category. Both are insightful musicians who've proven themselves in some of the most challenging music of their respective repertoires.

The first part of this disc features a well-chosen set of 17 songs. Graham, accompanied thoughtfully by Aimard, gives eloquent accounts of these quirky, evocative, and often moving compositions. Her singing is radiant and her remarkable versatility serves her well throughout. The second half of the album is devoted to the daunting Second Piano Sonata, "Concord, Mass., 1840-60," its four movements named for some of that town's most notable residents. Aimard renders an incisive reading of the work, moving through the thickets of dense sonorities and the complexities of its multiple rhythms, harmonies, and melodies with a grace and ease that belies its difficulty. These are brilliant performances that should rank among the finer realizations of Ives's music.
