Ambient missionary Mixmaster Morris pioneered the concept of the chill-out room, a haven for red-eyed ravers weary of blistering BPM. Morris' chill-out sets were harmonic convergences where the halcyon tones of Terry Riley, gamelan, John Cage, classical music, Indian music, spoken-word samples, blissed-out techno, and free jazz melted together in softly iridescent splendor. It has been several years since Morris' last album/manifesto, GLOBAL CHILLAGE. Meanwhile, club music has caught up with him, spawning such MMM-approved--and chill-out ready--schools as ambient drum-and-bass and instrumental hip-hop.
IT'S TOMORROW ALREADY tracks such as "Playing Around With Sound," sequenced much like his remarkable DJ sets, find Morris preaching to the converted. The album's kaleidoscopic swirls of melody, samples of psychedelic gurus, and transmutative beats approach dance music from a passionate, higher-consciousness mind-state that seems a little quaint in the shadow of millennial anxiety. That Morris remains a master of ambient dance music is undeniable. "The Lie-In King" and "12 O'Clock" revel in the gorgeous details of his luxuriously layered, wall-to-wall production. Intuitive touches of sitar, vibes, tabla, and mutated breakbeat grace "Fish Dances" and "Another Tomorrow," a resplendent rhapsody of rhythm and melody shaped around a nugget of ageless Sun Ra wisdom.
