Title Note

This nostalgic collection isn't particularly summery, but instead attempts to re-create an era when 45 rpm singles, vinyl albums, and hand-held transistor radios were the main musical mediums, a time when Hawaiian radio stations mixed mainland Top 40 hits with local island music in a frequently delightful blend of the near and the far. Not all of the artists here have Hawaiian roots, but everything collected on Island Summer was a hit on local radio. Highlights include mainland hits "Sweet City Woman" and "Dancing in the Moonlight" by the Stampeders and King Harvest, respectively, and some local gems like Merrell Fankhauser's odd UFO ode "On Our Way to Hana" and the crunching "Remember Mary" by the Sweet Marie, which by all rights should have been a huge international hit. Regional radio, at least in regard to local music, is increasingly rare in the early 21st century, and sets like this remind you that it wasn't always like that, that radio play lists at one time reflected actual geographical communities. ~ Steve Leggett
