Review

JazzTimes (8/03, p.141) - "...Levine has shining moments showing excellent control of the original's melodic and harmonic richness..."

Title Note

Personnel: Mark Levine (piano); Sheila Smith (vocals); Harvey Wainapel (soprano saxophone, clarinet); Peter Barshay (bass); Paul Van Wageningen (drums); Michael Spiro (percussion).

Producers: Bud Spangler, Michael Spiro, Mark Levine.

Recorded at Bay Recording Studios, Berkeley, California.

ISLA was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album.

Smart musicianship, adventurous playing and a deep-seated feel for Afro-Cuban grooves permeate this recording by pianist Mark Levine and his quintet, the Latin Tinge. Levine began his career playing with the likes of Mongo Santamaria and Willie Bobo, honing his chops while learning to synthesize a bop vocabulary with the propulsive, interlocking rhythms of Latin jazz. Those lessons are readily apparent here, as Levine's accented melodies and fluid lead lines are pushed by a relentless rhythm section and abetted by the soprano sax and clarinet of Harvey Wainapel.

Alberto Ruiz's "Corta Ese Bonche" gets a seven-minute workout, with spiraling crescendos and palpable group interplay. "A Free Man" finds the group in a laid-back, introspective mood, but the beats creep back to mid-tempo samba and bossa nova moods on "You Know I Care," "Con Alma," and even "Te Para Dos (Tea For Two). Levine and Wainapel offer challenging bop solos over clattering percussion, while elastic, sliding basslines from Peter Barshay keep the low end loose. This is sophisticated, infectious music.
