Richard Pryor Artist Snapshot:

Although his early 1960s career as a comedian echoed the easygoing routines of Bill Cosby, Richard Pryor found his true voice after 1969 by incorporating angry and often profane social commentary into his act. This move translated to a surprising popularity with both black and white audiences, and he would soon embark on a highly lucrative film career. Pryor's comedy has a biting edge, addressing topics of racism and inequity head on, and he delivered it with honesty and intensity, as well as an uncanny knack for mimicry. In an infamous incident in 1980, Pryor lit himself on fire (either while freebasing cocaine, trying to commit suicide, or both), but he turned the dark material into brilliant comedy. In 1986 it became known that Pryor suffered from multiple sclerosis, and his appearances became less frequent until his death in 2005.

Title Note

Recorded live at The Latin Casino, Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

All material written by Richard Pryor.

By the mid 70's, Richard Pryor was one of the most popular and instantly recognizable comedians on the planet, due to his witty and racy routine that appeared to have no boundaries. There appeared to be no subject that Pryor couldn't work into a hilarious stand up comedy sketch, as his popularity grew due to the success of such Warner Bros releases as 1975's IS IT SOMETHING I SAID? Pryor is at the top of his game throughout, as he touches upon several bits that would not only become amongst Pryor's greatest of all time, but as comedy's finest as well. Richard is on fire with such hilarious segments as "Eulogy" (in which he takes on the role of a wacky preacher), "Cocaine," and "Mudbone (Little Feets)," the latter a character that has become a Pryor trademark that he's returned to throughout his career. Along with BICENTENNIAL NIGGER and SUPERNIGGER, IS IT SOMETHING I SAID? ranks among Pryor's all time greatest.
