On 2008's AN INVITATION, vocalist Inara George (The Bird and the Bee) collaborates with renowned arranger/multi-instrumentalist Van Dyke Parks (Brian Wilson, the Byrds) for a buoyant album of orchestral indie-pop. The swooning symphonic aesthetic of Parks is fully on display during these 13 songs (see the dreamy "Right as Wrong" and the stately "Rough Design"), though George, the daughter of late Little Feat frontman Lowell George, is never outshined. In fact, Parks's deft string, woodwind, and horn ornamentation perfectly complements George's warm voice and literate lyrics, making AN INVITATION a fine inclusion to the chamber-pop canon.
