Review

JazzTimes (3/97, p.84) - "...The introspective stance of the soloists is balanced by a rhythmic complexity that constantly superimposes phrases implying three, five, or six over the basic four, both in solos and in the dizzying ensemble statements. The overall effect is a music of breathtaking purity..."

Title Note

Personnel: Lennie Tristano (piano); Warne Marsh, Ted Brown (tenor saxophone); Ronnie Ball (piano); Billy Bauer (guitar); George Tucker, Arnold Fishkin (bass); Jeff Morton, Harold Granowsky, Denzil Best (drums).

This collection contains the pianist Lennie Tristano's late-1940s experiments in free jazz with the saxophonists Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh, both pupils of his, as well as eight of Marsh's 1956 recordings, originally released as JAZZ OF TWO CITIES. "Intuition" places its improvisation within a rigorous technical framework, while Marsh's later, post-bop pieces sound both adventurous and delicately lyrical.
