Raised primarily in Alabama, soul queen Betty Harris came to New York in the early 1960s to make her first recordings. She hit it big with a version of Solomon Burke's "Cry To Me," then moved to New Orleans to record with legendary producer-songwriter Allen Toussaint. Around 1970, Harris tired of the music scene, but returned in 2007 with her first proper album in nearly 30 years, 2007's INTUITION. Her vocal abilities are still intact here, and her style remains firmly rooted in the gospel-oriented Southern soul tradition. Loaded with gusto, the album finds Harris delivering both funky struts ("It Is What It Is") and oozing silky-smooth slow-burners (the title song).
