Dancehall reggae singer Althea Hewitt makes her full-length debut with a crisp, slick selection of ballads and dance tunes. A 26-year-old Jamaican with a full-bodied voice and confident delivery, Hewitt is equally at ease with sharp political material like "Crime Scene" and more traditional ballads like the exquisite, jazz-tinged "Love That A Woman Should Give To A Man," which has the same retro vibe and old-school sound of a Jamaican Amy Winehouse or Duffy. (An alternate mix at album's end quotes Barbara Mason's 1965 soul classic "Yes, I'm Ready.") INTRODUCING ALTHEA HEWITT is full of such fine, self-assured gems.
