Review

Dirty Linen (p.54) - "His music deftly combines Arab-Andalusian music with French and global elements, including Gypsy music, flamenco, jazz, Latin, and African influences."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.116) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Gypsy and Arab rhythms are woven together with jazz, hints of flamenco and Philippe Eidel's rocking accordion."

Title Note

Personnel: Akim El Sikameya (vocals, violin, background vocals); Taofik Farah (acoustic guitar, bouzouki, charango, mandolin); Philippe Eidel (bouzouki, charango, mandolin, accordion, piano); Yannick Soccal (saxophone); Michel Feuhere (trumpet); Bernard Paganotti (bass instrument, double bass); Julien Tekeyan (drum, percussion); Salim Allal, Melya (background vocals).

Algerian singer-songwriter Akim El Sikameya's distinctive vocals and violin prowess have made him a favorite on the world-music circuit (he was the talk of the 2005 WOMAD festival) and on this 2008 release, he puts both assets to great use. Blending traditional Algerian sounds with other influences (bossa nova, gypsy folk), his music embodies cosmopolitanism while his from-the-heart lyrics extol freedom, tolerance, and love.
