Review

Kerrang (Magazine) (p.56) - "When you hear searing opener 'Battalions Of Steel' paired with fist-raising singalong-ready second track 'Live To Rock' you're already preparing yourself for the best Saxon album in years."
Record Collector (magazine) (p.101) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "The building, rhythmic, choir-like intro to opener 'Battalions Of Steel' soon shifts into classic speed metal with a nod to Manowar."

Title Note

One of the last fervent flag-wavers of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, Saxon unleashes its 18th studio release. One of the most dynamic and epic albums of the band's career, INTO THE LABYRINTH combines the Deep Purple-meets-AC/DC barroom rock with progressive, near-Teutonic metal anthems. The elements that truly make the album special are Biff Byford's laid-back, swaggering vocal style and Charlie Bauerfeind's (Blind Guardian, Helloween, Gamma Ray) rich production. INTO THE LABYRINTH closes with a stripped-down, bluesy rendition of the fan favorite "Coming Home," the original version of which appeared on 2001's KILLING GROUND.

Okay, these guys have been around for thirty years under the name Saxon. They were one of the many groups that were part of the N.W.O.B.H.M. (New wave Of British Heavy Metal) and one of the most promising. The bands earlier releases (the self titled E.P. called Saxon, Wheels Of Steel, Strong Arm Of The Law, Denim And Leather, The Power And The Glory, Crusader) are by far their best pieces of work. In the mid to late eighties they joined the hair bands of that time releasing pop oriented hard rock. They shaped up in the early nineties with Solid Ball Of Rock and Dogs Of War. The new millenium would see a few good releases (Lionhart and The Inner Sanctum) but this latest called Into The Labyrinth is just a rehash of those mentioned albums. Nothing new and pretty much average songs at best. Sure Live To Rock, Battalions Of Steel, Come Rock Of Ages are good but not to what Ive come to expect of the band. And why a blues version of Coming Home was even necessary is beyond me. Biff is a good singer but lets leave the blues alone.
