Down Beat (p.69) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "The work here is settled and comfortable....'Blue' carries subliminal hints of the final bars of 'Lush Life.'....'Fleur De Lis' has a clever line..."
JazzTimes (p.105) - "Payton turns in a strongly evocative performance on a rendition of Jerry Goldsmith's atmospheric 'Chinatown'....INTO THE BLUE may be Payton's most satisfying outing to date."
Personnel: Nicholas Payton (vocals, trumpet, synthesizer); Kevin Hays (piano, electric piano, Fender Rhodes piano, keyboards); Vicente Archer, Vincente Archer (acoustic bass); Marcus Gilmore (drums); Daniel Sadownick (percussion).
Recording information: Piety Street Studios, New Orleans, Louisiana (2007).
INTO THE BLUE (2008) is New Orleans native and trumpet player Nicolas Payton's first album as leader since 2003's SONIC TRANCE. During that time, Payton has played with everyone from Don Cheatham to Jill Scott, but this session is cause for celebration for the artist's fans. Payton's gorgeous tone and nimble technique are evident on each of these 10 tracks, which in their lyricism and combination of acoustic and electric instruments recall the heyday of post bop and early fusion a la Miles Davis's FILLES DE KILLIMANJARO. Cool-toned, beautiful, and adventurous, INTO THE BLUE is a fine bet for contemporary jazz fans.
