Title Note

After parting with Gleaming Spires, the three-person rock band that had backed brothers Ron and Russell Mael on the five previous Sparks albums, the Maels set up their own label with distribution assistance from Rhino Records. Their first release, 1988's INTERIOR DESIGN, was recorded in the brothers' home studio with just a guitarist and drummer helping out.

Like Sparks' mid-'70s albums BIG BEAT and INTRODUCING SPARKS, both made under similar circumstances, INTERIOR DESIGN is a cautious album that doesn't adapt any particular sound or musical fashion. The emphasis, however, is still on the interplay of Russell's unique, often falsetto voice and Ron's instantly catchy melodies and prolix lyrics. It's unthinkable that a Sparks album could lack personality and wit, but the musically sedate INTERIOR DESIGN is certainly one of the brothers' less flamboyant efforts. The highlights are "Madonna" (yes, it's about her-sort of)-and the magnificent "The Toughest Girl In Town."
