Annotation

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Stevland Morris began his remarkable career in the early 1960s, when the Detroit record label Tamla Motown was in its infancy. One of his mother's six children by different fathers, Morris was blind from babyhood. He displayed a youthful aptitude for the harmonica, piano, and percussion, and was soon discovered by Ronald White, who sang in the highly successful Motown group the Miracles. Morris's subsequent transformation from 11-year-old child prodigy into Stevie Wonder, one of the most imaginative and successful R&B artists of the late 20th century, is related in INNERVISIONS, Martin E. Horn's book-length profile of the innovative performer. Horn covers the major points in Wonder's career, from his first big hit--the instrumental "Fingertips," recorded live in Chicago in 1962--to his bid for artistic control with his groundbreaking 1972 album, MUSIC OF MY MIND, which broke with Motown tradition by being largely self-produced, self-written, and self-performed. Horn also spotlights the musician's extensive later endeavors in the fields of social reform and charity work. Informative and accessible, INNERVISIONS is a useful and entertaining introduction to this fascinating artist.
