On its 2006 Drive-Thru Records debut, the Southern California-based emo-rock ensemble Halifax unveils a set of streamlined punk-pop that balances urgency with accessibility. Although it occasionally indulges in heavy-metal guitar leads (see the propulsive "Under Fire" and the melancholy "Giant in the Ring"), the band avoids many of the pretensions inherent in the emo style, resulting in a charmingly straightforward first outing.
