Review

Spin (12/97, p.163) - 8 (out of 10) - "...There's...a smart sense on INDOOR LIVING that the tragedy of losing love isn't immediate heartbreak, but the more enduring loss of shared history....The album's maturity recalls someone whose summers back home are over, and in that way, the music is positively autumnal..."
Entertainment Weekly (9/19/97, p.85) - "Not ones to stylistically shape-shift, Superchunk do lean a bit more on keyboards and harmonies on their eighth album. And though long past being indie firebrands, the Chapel Hill, N.C. foursome are still potently, if predictably, scrappy..."
- Rating: B+
Magnet (11-12/97, p.77) - "...[Superchunk] has cooled it on the stop-start power anthems in favor of more fully realized power-pop structure..."
Option (11-12/97, p.119) - "...Superchunk continues to evolve into a more mature band...without diluting what made it great in the first place....the best Superchunk record yet."
Melody Maker (9/13/97, p.49) - "...with squealing moogs and emotive synth breaks. The 1997 version of Superchunk is a 'Let's get to the goregous hooks and leave the dull bits for other bands' sort of thing."
NME (Magazine) (8/30/97, p.51) - "...despite being infected with a terminal case of Behind The Times Syndrome, INDOOR LIVING is their most ambitious and accessible record to date..."

Title Note

Superchunk: Laura Ballance, Jim Wilbur, Jon Wurster, Mac McCaughan.

Recorded at Echo Park Studios, Bloomington, Indiana.

INDOOR LIVING finds Superchunk exploring new musical landscapes without abandoning their quirky bubble gum pop style. Not wanting to re-hash yesterday's simple, sticky pop formulas, the band twists and chews the pop format, leaving it a little rough around the edges, but still juicy and flavorful. "The Popular Music" features abrasive, jagged guitars reminiscent of Polvo and a Weezeresque vocal. Graced by tight drumming, steady bass, and innovative guitar playing, INDOOR LIVING strikes just the right balance of catchy, accessible pop tunes and innovative songwriting.
