Review

Down Beat (p.65) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Brubeck, the master composer, has an informed point of view on each song, and develops his themes with elegance and rigor."
JazzTimes (p.92) - "[T]he best tracks are those that never seem to grow old, the opening 'You'll Never Know,' the closing track, 'I'm Afraid the Masquerade is Over,'...and 'Sweet Lorraine'..."

Title Note

Personnel: Dave Brubeck (piano).

Along with the rock band Pavement, jazz pianist Dave Brubeck is Stockton, California's most famous export. Since the 1950s, Brubeck has been the most famous and successful exponent of what is known as jazz's Cool School. Decades after his success with the hit single "Take Five," Brubeck is still making beautiful music--INDIAN SUMMER is one of his infrequent solo recitals. This disc has a fascinatingly melancholy tone throughout, from the sparse elegy "You'll Never Know" to the wistful "September Song" to the elegant, haunting, oddly modern-sounding title song that is the closer. This particular SUMMER is a perfect companion for evenings (or leisurely mornings) when one is taking those solitary walks down memory lane.
