Album Description

There's a huge range of Hindu devotional music in the Indian state of Kerala, which sits on the Arabian Sea, separated from the rest of the subcontinent by mountains. In that isolation, the music has taken on interesting tones; some traditions, like the massive percussion orchestras or the use of the C-shaped horn called the kombu, have remained almost static, while the singing in the temples can sometimes offer a mix of Arab and Indian styles that's definitely beguiling. To hear the kombus playing, however, is something remarkable, as on "Kombu Pattu." The sound is certainly of the earth, but some of its qualities are unearthly. The vocal pieces, too, offer remarkable textures, as on "Ayyappan Pattu," which feels like nothing less than a journey. Many of the pieces stretch out gradually ("Athanta Melan" is over 12 minutes long, for example), allowing for full enjoyment of the music. A fabulous record from a place few really know exists. ~ Chris Nickson
