Saves The Day Artist Snapshot:

One of the most popular bands of the early-2000s emo scene, Saves The Day hails from New Jersey, and began recording in the '90s, while they were still teenagers. The lineup of the band was significantly altered following the release of their first indie album, 1998's CAN'T SLOW DOWN. As the band's sound and audience solidified, they found themselves in the big leagues by the time of their 2003 release, IN REVERIE, with their smarter-than-average blend of punk, pop, and emo reaching more ears than ever.

Review

Rolling Stone (10/16/03, p.86) - 3 stars out of 5 - "The impressive thing about [IN REVERIE] is how much energy it packs without resorting to emo or pop-punk cliches..."
Spin (01/04, p.102) - "...For someone with such a sweet voice, Conley is a master at psychological warfare....Behind that boyish grin and gawky posture lies a savage mind..." - Grade: B-
Entertainment Weekly (9/19/03, p.86) - "...It's an unexpectedly poppy collection of left-field melodies and twisty song structures that wrap around your brain like a head cold..." - Rating: A-
CMJ (9/22/03, p.4) - "...Here the band sheds its previous skins and keeps its face forward....Christopher Conley's [vocals] recall a younger Elliott Smith, while Pete Salloway's guitars gently weep--when they're not pouring out power-pop riffs..."

For IN REVERIE, their major-label debut, Saves the Day dives deeper into the pop pool that they've been swimming in since their indie punk days. Although there's still a heavy guitar presence, the energetic lads seem most intent on crafting sunny, melodic tunes with a melancholy lyrical edge. Frontman Christopher Conley's quirky yet likeable vocals are welcoming, even when he's singing "In the darkness/we were all strip-searched/nothing was found" on "What Went Wrong." Meanwhile, the rest of the group displays their instrumental skills with complex yet catchy songs such as "In My Waking Life" and the title track. Drawing apparent inspiration from Big Star, the Posies, Elliott Smith, Shudder to Think, and Green Day, Saves the Day has created an intelligent and charming pop album that's not afraid to rock out.
