In 1934, the U.S. army has decided to eliminate its cavalry forces in order to modernize in preparation for a possible war with either Germany or Japan. In one sleepy Southwestern base, five men with a history of insubordination receive orders to shoot the remaining 400 horses in their unit. Believing that their honor as cavalrymen is at stake, they leave on a wild, 2000 mile escape ride to deliver the horses to freedom. But a mechanized army unit pursues them to finish the mission.
