Review

Rolling Stone (6/6/02, p.78) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "...Delightfully eccentric...electronic gurgles, hiccups and hisses, savage drum-machine beats...and the kind of retro, shimmering textures that would make Pink Floyd proud....Gomez have never sounded so youthful."
Entertainment Weekly (5/3/02, p.86) - "...Gomez's three-vocalist acoustic vamps [are] now festooned with gadgetry..." - Rating: B
Magnet (6-7/02, p.91) - "...Retains the dreamy folk, throbbing psych-rock amalgams and luminous vocal harmonies that'd make a boy-band svengali weep with envy, all pureed in a sunshine 'n' tequila blender..."
CMJ (3/25/02, p.5) - "...This album is loaded...they go barefoot and bloozy, jazzy, jammy - even rave-y..."
Mojo (Publisher) (April 2002, p.116) - "...No loss of the rich textures, exotic sounds and somersaulting arrangements for which they're justly admired....the aural palette is as wide as ever, with dub, dance, heavy rock, world music and beyond all seamlessly blended together..."
NME (Magazine) (3/23/02, p.36) - 7 out of 10 - "...Tighter song structures, more varied sounds, richly layered production and subtle nods to deeper desires make IN OUR GUN the most accessible Gomez album yet..."

Title Note

British darlings Gomez first came to public attention in the late '90s with their combination of contemporary Britpop and '60s psychedelic rock. To be fair to this quite modern band, a slight resemblance to the odd Traffic tune was about the extent of their flirtation with psychedelia. IN OUR GUN seems to find Gomez moving further away from those '60s roots without abandoning them altogether. Burbling synthesizers rub shoulders with jangling acoustic guitars, and Radiohead jostles with the Beatles for the reigning vocal influence. While there are a couple of stray Middle-Easternisms and other remnants of hippiedom to be found here, IN OUR GUN is more akin to the way the Beta Band channels those same spirits via modern electronica. Like Coldplay or Brits manque Smash Mouth, Gomez sounds like they've got just enough of their parents' records in their collection to maintain a sense of history without leaving Britpop's borders too far behind.
