Review

Rolling Stone (p.91) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[The album] rocks lightly and stays bright around the corners....Keeping her laid-back but memorable melodies up front."

Title Note

Personnel includes: Juliana Hatfield (vocals, guitar); Peter Adams (keyboards); Josh Lattanzi (bass); Damon Richardson, Steve Scully (drums).

Additional personnel: Jill Kurtz (electric harmonica).

Producers: Juliana Hatfield, David Leonard, David Way.

Anyone thinking Juliana Hatfield would have mellowed with age would be wrong. After hearing IN EXILE DEO--Hatfield's first full-length album since 2000's BEAUTIFUL CREATURE--it's clear that she is not willing to age gracefully. This album has its share of bitterly raging rockers with sharp choruses ("Dirty Dog," the Rolling Stones-ish "Because We Love You"), wistful acoustic ballads ("Tomorrow Never Comes"), and songs that fall nicely between the two approaches (the majestic, Badfinger-like "Some Rainy Sunday," "It Should've Been You").

The former Blake Baby's gauzy, breathy, little-girl-lost voice has ripened--it's a bit deeper, a bit tougher (without being overly dramatic), sounding like someone being dragged into adulthood, reluctantly shedding what remains of youthful innocence. Alternately forlorn and confrontational, IN EXILE DEO goes a long way towards proving that indie rockers can get older without getting soft.
