This 2005 release of Big Mama Thornton's 1965 studio session in London is a pristine snapshot of the too-often-overlooked blues singer. After her smash hit "Hound Dog" brought her fame in 1953 (Thornton's version predated Elvis Presley's by three years, and unquestionably packs more of a punch), her commercial star began to sink, yet Thornton's gravelly, gutsy wail never lost its luster.
IN EUROPE features a top-notch band (including Buddy Guy on lead guitar and Fred McDowell on slide), some of Thornton's best tunes--including "Hound Dog," of course--and six bonus tracks. The disc concludes with a rare interview clip of Thornton in conversation with Arhoolie Records founder Chris Strachwitz (Thornton found a comfortable home with Arhoolie in the late '60s). These features make IN EUROPE a must for collectors and a fine starting place for Thornton neophytes.
